The 2020 Lake Drive Highway Safety Improvement Project (HSIP) is currently nearing completion. This pedestrian / vehicle safety project is funded 90% federal - 10% local. One of the few remaining items include the application of a high friction surface treatment (HFST) on the pavement along Lake Drive to increase tire friction at curves in the roadway providing shorter vehicular stopping distances. This improvement has proven to provide a high cost / benefit safety ratio. Construction noise is expected.
The general contractor, LaLonde Contractors, has scheduled as identified above, the installation of HFST at three (3) curve locations on Lake Drive (see map on backside). Dates are all weather permitting.
During this work on each of the three (3) selected curve locations of Lake Drive the roadway will be completely closed to all traffic. The scope of the work will entail sweeping and preparing the pavement, applying the HFST, allowing proper cure time, placing temporary pavement markings and then cleaning and sweeping the newly surfaced pavement. It is assumed at this time that each of the three (3) HFST applications will take place on separate evenings. A marked detour route will be installed for each location to provide a safe route around this work. The following week the permanent pavement markings will then be scheduled to be painted under live traffic conditions.
The first two curve locations will require Public Work Department staff to temporarily convert Palisades Road to allow for two way traffic to accommodate the proposed road closures.
The Whitefish Bay Public Works Department staff understand the inconvenience that this project creates for you and greatly appreciates your patience and understanding. Please be careful, slow down and pay extra attention when driving around this and all construction zones.
