Important back to school crosswalk info! The Village is in the process of completing the Silver Spring Drive/Santa Monica Blvd Intersection Traffic Signal Replacement Project. The intersection will be under construction through mid-October. For the first phase of the project, the crosswalks at the intersection will be closed to pedestrians.
With school starting within the next two weeks, you and your children should plan to utilize the crosswalks at Berkeley Blvd and Shoreland Ave (map pictured). Crossing Guards will be at these alternative locations to help facilitate safe crossings. It is not safe to walk around the construction at Silver Spring Drive and Santa Monica Blvd.
The Whitefish Bay Police Department will be actively monitoring driving activity at the intersection of Silver Spring and Santa Monica and will be issuing citations as needed. The monetary penalty for any citation in this area is greatly increased because it is a construction zone. Please be mindful of pedestrians.
The Signal Replacement Project is part of a larger safety project in the Village, funded through the DOT Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), which the Village was able to obtain 90% federal funding. The traffic signals at Bay Ridge were replaced first to avoid long backups on Silver Spring from students and teachers waiting to turn into the parking lot at Dominican High School. Both of these projects will improve the long term safety of Silver Spring Drive.
